The Roxbury Experience : Roxbury, NY

The Roxbury Experience: Two INCREDIBLE, luxurious, family-friendly theme hotels – just 2 miles apart. One is the Roxbury Motel, and the other is the Roxbury at Stratton Falls. Owned by the cutest couple on the internet, these places are completely hand-crafted and will absolutely blow your mind. Surely one of the most incredible theme hotel experiences in the entire world.

Location: Roxbury, New York

Cost: ~ $100-$900 depending on the room/cottage, time of year, etc. Many options for families or groups!

Our Overall Rating: 5/5

This is such an elevated version of themed hotels that in our minds they have their own category. This place is such high quality but they also offer a wide variety of price points and extravagance! You can get a multi-story, multi-bedroom cottage, or a motel room that is themed and thoughtfully designed. We absolutely loved the range they offer, and thought the hospitality was also perfection. They have a lovely pool, spa, and the Stratton Falls location literally has a waterfall! It was absolutely stunning, and a super simple walk from the hotel. Wow – so many good things to say. Perfect for a group trip, family trip (I can’t even imagine what I would have thought stepping into the Cinderella’s Gown room as a kid!!!), honeymoon, anniversary, girls getaway, etc!!! A magical getaway indeed.

Cleanliness Rating: 5/5

So clean that everything felt new…which is not common at theme hotels!

Favorite Room: Stratton Falls favorites: ALL of them. But there’s a special place in my heart for Galileo’s Gate, The Faerie Forest, Dracula’s Fangs, and Cinderella’s Gown.

Motel location: MaryAnn’s Coconut Cream Pie, The Wizard’s Emeralds, George’s Spacepad, Genie’s Bottle.

Axis : Chicago, IL

Axis: One of the Prestige Club hotels in the Chicago area. This is a 21 and up, members only hotel that includes their Aura and Ambiance locations. Membership is around $30/year and you can apply online or in person. You no longer have to live in the area to apply.

Location: AXIS, 5335 S Pulaski Rd, Chicago, IL 60632

Cost: ~$100-$600 depending on the room + night. I believe they offer afternoon rates as well but call to find out.

Our Overall Rating: 5/5

This is a very explicitly sexy adult hotel. Think jacuzzi tubs, circle beds and ceiling mirrors, but also dance poles, Kama Sutra chairs, wedge pillows, and more. The in-room amenities are similar to the Sybaris pool suites that we love – but a more dark and sexy vibe. The decor is mostly black and grey, where at Sybaris it’s mostly white and beige. I could see the audience being younger here compared to Sybaris as it feels a little bit like a club as opposed to a living room or home, but both offer great, steamy getaways. At Axis, they have a few different tiers of suites to choose from, and we got the largest called Lush. We loved the extra touches of all the fun lighting options, and I’m still mad we didn’t get up early enough to also try the lay-down shower?! Definitely on the list for our return.

Cleanliness Rating: 5/5

We were super impressed with the cleanliness! We had the biggest room and I believe the hotel had been renovated relatively recently, but we’re hoping to check out more rooms and their other locations to compare.

Favorite Room: Lush suite was amazing.

That 90’s Place : Johnson Valley, CA

That 90’s Place: A vacation rental house that’s decorated with 80s-00s memorabilia and activities that will bring back lots of memories!

Location: Johnson Valley, California – near Joshua Tree!

Cost: ~$200-$400 depending on the night, sleeps up to 7 guests

Our Overall Rating: 5/5

This place was endless nostalgia!! We spent the whole time playing with toys and games we haven’t seen in over a decade and it was so much fun. Even just putting in a CD or a VHS was such a visceral experience and made us feel all sorts of bittersweet emotions. We love that this can be a group getaway, bring all your friends who grew up in the 90s, or your kids who need to see what your childhood was like! Bonus points for the fire pit, hammocks, and calm desert sunsets. BYO Sun-In.

Cleanliness Rating: 5/5

You’re in the desert so things can get dusty but we had no cleanliness issues inside.

Favorite Room: The whole house!

Standard London : London, England (UK)

The Standard London: The Standard is known to be quite the swanky hotel, and this certainly met our expectations. It feels vintage inspired and very hip and cool. The design is sophisticated and the room was stunning.

Location: 10 Argyle St, London WC1H 8EG, United Kingdom

Cost: ~ $200-$2000

Our Overall Rating: 5/5

Certainly not a ‘themed’ experience – but definitely a fancy one! In some way or another, it felt like a fantasy, but in this fantasy we were a couple of kings. The tub was lovely, the rooms are interesting, and the robes are luxurious. Such a fun spot, and right across from Kings Cross train station.

Cleanliness Rating: 5/5

No complaints at all – even the tub was incredibly clean.

Favorite Room: We loved the King of Kings corner suite!

Comfort Suites : Stevensville, MI

Comfort Suites: This is an incredibly unremarkable hotels in many ways – but there are a few fun pieces of decor leftover from a previous era. The lobby has some etched glass featuring lighthouses and beach scenes, and there is a white heart shaped jacuzzi in one of the rooms.

Location: 2633 W Marquette Woods Rd, Stevensville, MI 49127

Cost: ~ $100-$300

Our Overall Rating: 2/5

Lots of beige and brown in this hotel – nothing is especially quality or thoughtful, but they get a couple points for keeping a heart tub intact!

Cleanliness Rating: 4/5

Pretty run of the mill hotel on the side of a highway – and the cleanliness was fine but certainly not reaching luxury standards!

Favorite Room: Room with the heart tub – they’ll know which one you mean.
